《奥本海默》改编自普利策获奖作品《奥本海默传——原子弹之父”的美国悲剧》，作者是凯·伯德和已故的马丁·J.舍温。该片使用 IMAX 65 毫米特大菲林拍摄，包括有史以来第一次使用 IMAX 黑白模拟摄像的部分。在本片中基里安·墨菲饰演罗伯特·奥本海默艾米莉·布朗特饰演他的妻子、生物学家和植物学家凯瑟琳·奥本海默（Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer）。奥斯卡奖得主马特·达蒙扮演曼哈顿项目主任莱斯利·格罗夫斯将军，小罗伯特·唐尼扮演美国原子能委员会的创始委员刘易斯·斯特劳斯（Lewis Strauss）。
