Demand for Air Conditioners and Fans Skyrockets Amid Heatwaves

BEIJING, July 31 (TiPost) – The sales revenue of air conditioners reached 130.2 billion yuan during the first half of this year, with a year-on-year increase of 19.5%.

Cooling appliances, including refrigerators and freezers, followed closely with sales revenue of 54.5 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 3.5% compared to the same period last year.

In the first six months of 2023, air conditioner sales through online or offline channels experienced a surge. Online sales of air conditioners reached 21.29 million units, up 67.6% year-on-year, and sales revenue hit 66.2 billion yuan. Meanwhile, offline sales jumped 80.7% to 15.97 million units, while sales revenue totaled 64 billion yuan.

On e-commerce platforms, cooling fans saw a significant 188.7% increase in sales in June compared to the previous month, while electric fans experienced an 87.3% sales increase.

China exported a total of 31.67 million air conditioners during the first half of this year, with exports in April and June rising by 1.2% and 13.2% year-on-year respectively.

China’s top air conditioner importer was Europe in the first half of 2023, and exports to Africa showed the fastest year-on-year growth.

In addition to air conditioners, there was substantial overseas demand for electric fans. In the first half of 2023, China exported 266.2 million electric fans, a year-on-year increase of 19.1%. The export revenue amounted to 25.78 billion yuan, an increase of 15.9% compared to the first six months of 2022. 

Besides North America, China’s electric fans also saw positive growth in exports to Asia, Africa, Europe, Latin America, and Australia.

According to statistics, the total electricity consumption in China during the first half of this year was 307.6 billion kilowatt-hours, a 5.0% year-on-year increase. The electricity consumption in June reached the highest point of 775.1 billion kilowatt-hours, representing a year-on-year increase of 3.9%.

In the first six months of 2023, the electricity consumption in the primary industry in China increased by 12.1%, in the secondary industry by 4.4%, and in the tertiary industry by 9.9%.

During the first half of the year, the total electricity consumption in the eastern, central, western, and northeastern regions was 1986.2 billion, 802.5 billion, 1284.7 billion, and 234.2 billion kilowatt-hours respectively, with year-on-year growth rates of 5.7%, 2.3%, 5.7%, and 4.8%.
